Get Even Review

"What is real? Don’t make assumptions. Don’t even think. Just focus and breathe. You’re so close now…and the master is on his way."

Get Even is a first person psychological thriller from The Farm 51 and Bandai Namco. You wake up in an asylum, injured and confused. Your only memory is of you attempting to rescue a teenage girl with a bomb strapped to her chest. You have a piece of VR technology strapped to your head that is designed to help you piece together your broken memories.

Straight away you feel Get Even is not going to be your usual, guns blazing roller coaster ride. It is very tense and had me edging my way forward instead of running. You're pretty much thrown in the deep end without much warning and are left to find your way forward, making your own choices on how you go about it.

Visually Get Even is stunning. A lot of work has been done creating the visual style of a run down asylum and the lighting adds a new layer to it. The walls look as though they are rotting away, shadows hide whatever your mind imagines and when you are replaying your memories the imagery of the digital world is shown off. You can manipulate areas to bring in sections that should have been there or digitise your enemies by shooting your way out.

The musical score here is what really drew me in, the way in which it is matched perfectly to the scenario you're in has you forgetting you're in a game and you're creeping forward in an area you should be running through. Cues are on point with the soundtrack as it speeds up when you're in a fast paced area only to slow down when you should be creeping around.

Unfortunately the visuals only get you so far. While the atmosphere portrayed has you on the edge of your seat, it demands more from the story that just isn't there. Get Even needed to focus more on the narrative and spend less time making you explore the environments. Puzzles become too familiar yet are done in a very cool way via your smart phone which is equipped with a DNA Scanner, a UAV Emitter and Infrared vision. They do break down to following footprints, blood trails or turning valves to get through to the next area.

All in all Get Even shows us just what a studio like The Farm 51 is capable of and should be recognised for their dive into the unknown. While Get Even has its shortcomings, The Farm 51 is a developer to watch. The story could do with a little more direction and a clear definition but visuals and sounds are AAA material.

My first playthrough of Get Even is finished, and with multiple ways to play the game I'll be heading in for another go, hopefully unlocking a better understanding of the story as I go.
