Squanchtendo VR
Justin Roiland, co-creator and
co-voice of the hit animated series Rick & Morty, has teamed up with gaming
veteran and former producer for Epic Games Tanya Watson to form a brand new
game studio dedicated specifically to virtual reality. Squanchtendo Games not
only has a memorable name but is promising, and already delivering, some weird
and wacky endeavours.
But the reveals did not stop there. As PAX West opened, the
showcase booth for Squanchtendo was one of the most sought after despite not
being featured on the main floor. It’s not too hard to see why:
The announcement doesn’t come as a total surprise as Rick
and Morty Simulator: Virtual Rick-ality for the HTC Vive was announced last
month by Adult Swim. And the adult comedy delivered in the game is just what
the team is aiming to produce. With Roiland previously expressing his deep
interest in developing for VR, it only makes sense that the man would want to
delve out on his own projects. Especially with the incredibly experienced Watson by his side.
The studio announced its first press release by releasing an
incredibly odd, yet very amusing, comic strip featuring the company’s official
mascot, Splzooshly! This hairy amoeba like character will give you the low-down
on what Squanchtendo is all about and how you can get involved.
With a rather impressive resume featuring titles such as
Gears of War, Bulletstorm and Fortnite, the former Epic game producer has earned a
fair amount of respect. This duo is a match made in heaven. And with rumours already circulating about VR functionality for
the yet to arrive Nintendo NX it seems that Squanchtendo may just be the studio
to bring a bit of modern fun to the rather classic console…
