Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition Review (Switch 2) — Portable Masterpiece or Compromised Epic?

When FromSoftware released Elden Ring, it reshaped our expectations of open-world game design. It abandoned rigid map markers and artificial hand-holding in favor of true exploration, breathtaking environmental storytelling, and relentless combat. Yet for years, experiencing the Lands Between meant being tethered to a high-end PC or a bulky home console.

With the launch of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition on the Nintendo Switch 2, FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco attempt what once seemed impossible: bringing one of the vastest, demanding action-RPGs of modern gaming to a hybrid handheld. Bundling both the award-winning base game and the expansive Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, this release is an ambitious package. But can hardware designed for portability handle the raw scale and intense performance demands of FromSoftware's dark fantasy epic?

The core game of Elden Ring remains untarnished by the jump to portable hardware. From the moment you step out of the Fringefolk Hero's Grave and look out over the sunlit fields of Limgrave, the sheer scale of the world impresses.
Right before it pummels you into submission.

Elden Ring has always been a bit of a fringe title for me. A beautiful world, some of the best gameplay elements in gaming today and a build system that allows you to craft your character to whatever style you choose to play. Unfortunately for me, I was never able to fully appreciate the world solely due to a very big gap in my skill levels.

Running a game of this scale on a portable system inevitably requires compromises. How those trade-offs affect your experience largely depends on whether you play primarily in handheld mode or docked on a TV.

Handheld seemed to bring the best results but can leave your Switch 2 open to the odd twisting. The dynamic resolution scaling looks remarkably crisp. The smaller physical screen size hides micro-inefficiencies, visual dithering, and lower-resolution asset scaling that would otherwise be glaring on a large display. Text readouts, inventory management, and tactical combat cues remain sharp and legible.

Docked and output to a 4k TV highlight the limitations of the Switch 2 but not to an extent that makes it unplayable. Pop in is very noticeable and during intense encounters the frame rate can suffer, noticeable if you're accustomed to playing on PC.

Rather than releasing a bare-bones port, FromSoftware designated this release as the definitive portable package by styling it as the Tarnished Edition.

Complete Expansion Inclusion: The entire Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is integrated seamlessly. Players can transition straight into the Land of Shadow once meeting the necessary in-game milestones, providing over 100+ combined hours of content out of the box.

Exclusive Starting Classes: Two lightweight new class configurations, including the Idus Knight, offer fresh early-game stat distributions and unique starting gear for returning players.

Control Optimizations: The game features customized button layouts optimized for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, as well as precise gyro-aiming support for bows and directional spell targeting.

Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition on the Switch 2 is a worthy addition to the multi award winning title. Allowing you to play on the go and seamlessly with very few limitations on the gameplay is a testament to the team at FromSoftware.
